Beginner Sewing Course


For Absolute Beginners!

If you have little or no sewing experience or you need a good refresher course to get a bit of confidence on the machine again, this is your course.

We start right at the beginning: the basic functions of a sewing machine, sewing terminology, and how to make 3 basic items: a tote bag, a cushion cover and a skirt. These items will teach you some basic sewing techniques, and you will complete an item to take home each week.

We provide sewing machines, or you can bring your own to learn on.

Where: Daylesford Neighbourhood Centre, 13 Camp St, Daylesford
When: Morning Session : Tuesdays 10am-1pm 4X3 hr

Course Guide

WEEK 1: Introduction to Sewing
+ Getting to know your sewing machine
+ Sewing terminology
+ Material composition
+ Making a basic tote bag
+ Lining

WEEK 2 : Zips ~ Making a Cushion
+ Cutting a basic pattern with seam allowance
+ Inserting an exposed zip
+ Gaining more control in straight lines and corners
+ Using an overlocker

WEEK 3 : Gathering Techniques ~ Making a Skirt
+ Learning different types of gathering and seams
+ Applying the knowledge we have learnt so far, to make a gathered skirt with an enclosed elastic waistband.

What to bring

I recommend getting a basic sewing kit together consisting of:
+ Fabric Scissors
+ Dressmakers Pins
+ Thread
+ Sewing Needles
+ Tailors Chalk
+ A Tape measure
+ WEEK 2; 1 metre cotton fabric for a cushion and 35cm zip, 40cm cushion insert
+ WEEK 3 : 2 metres of cotton fabric for a skirt, thread and 25mm elastic (2 metres)
